Dance club

American drug addict

A “house party vibe,” is how American Junkie manager Art Hernandez describes the Pier Avenue dance club, which features two DJs on weekends. The room is a step back, singing, rock: the second dance floor, house music. The club also brings in heavyweights for live performances, like rappers Mike Jones, Too Short and Kid Ink. The venue, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary this summer, also has 30 TV screens, a table tennis table and a menu including their Junkie cup, a mix of vodka and Red Bull, and their huge burger hungover. Not your typical beachfront club. — — Elka Worner

Good product

This category used to be divided into best waiter and best waitress, but there’s really no reason to do that, because the art and skill of good service has nothing to do with sex. We also recognize that teamwork is important in any restaurant, because the failure of one link in the chain dooms the effort. Good Stuff has been notable for having a high percentage of employees who have been there for years, even decades, an achievement in a time of staff shortages and job change. They are people who love their jobs and support their colleagues, and the group effort is visible in every place.

Manhattan bread and bagel

Making a good bagel is a specialized skill that involves boiling the dough before baking it so it has the right crust. Manhattan Bread and Bagel bakers have mastered this technique, so they can focus on working with different flour blends and add-ins to deliver the variety consumers appreciate. Whether you like them sweet or savory, whole wheat, egg or plain, on their own or with their lox spread or other condiments, there’s something here with the texture and flavor you love.

Third-generation baker Todd Becker is known for his creative surfboard cakes, cupcakes and cookies, as well as his famous squaw bread.

Beckers Bakery and Deli

Becker’s Bakery has a limited selection compared to others, but the specialists often do. They are famous for their squaw bread, a soft wheat that goes great with sandwiches and is wonderful straight out of the toaster with a little butter. No one seems to know if this was offered when they opened in 1942 or if it was invented some time later, but it’s certainly a favorite for generations of locals. The theory here seems to be that success shouldn’t be spoiled, and since customers like a small, well-done selection, keep giving people what they want.

Torrance Bakery

Of all the beach town bakeries, our readers’ favorite is in Torrance? Yes they are, and they are not alone, as there is a line outside most days. Elegantly decorated tiered wedding cakes are a specialty there, and they have a jaw-dropping photo gallery, but you don’t have to wait for someone to get married to try one. Get one for a birthday, housewarming, or just because you want to invite friends over and make the day special with a cake. They have 30 different toppings and all kinds of frostings and cake flavors, so whatever you like, they’ll do it. Not in the mood for a rally? They have Napoleons, Eclairs, and all the usual cupcakes and donuts, so you can just celebrate your life by having it followed by a daily meal.
