Keiynan Lonsdale opened up about Ollie and Sammy’s ‘Dance Academy’ kiss and how important that scene was to him

“I don’t think I’ve ever kissed a guy [or] never dated a guy before doing this on TV.”

Actor, singer and dancer Keiynan Lonsdale has taken Hollywood by storm. He appeared in major hits like Love, Simon, the flash and Work it, and his latest project is an adorable queer romantic comedy from BuzzFeed Studios, in which he stars alongside Dylan Sprouse and Sarah Hyland.

But if you’re Australian, chances are you’ll remember Keiynan from his Dance School days.

Now, for those who weren’t lucky enough to grow up with this iconic Australian children’s show, Dance School revolved around a group of teenagers attending the National Academy in Sydney.

Although it may be a bit cringeworthy, Dance School was ahead of its time. The characters were relatable and the show didn’t shy away from addressing teenage issues like mental health, eating disorders, gender identity and sudden death (I’m still traumatized by Sammy’s accident) .

More importantly, it featured a same-sex relationship between two characters – Ollie Lloyd (played by Keiynan) and Sammy Lieberman (played by Thom Green).

“Playing the character of Ollie, who is so – to some degree – confident in himself and his sexuality. It was nice to be able to embody that. hurdle to think that there are people out there who will associate me as gay, or even assume that I am, and that’s out of my control.”

Looking back on Ollie and Sammy’s first kiss, Keiynan explained that it wasn’t just a defining moment for the Australian teenagers watching, but also for himself.

“It took me out of my comfort zone. I don’t think I’ve ever kissed a guy [or] never dated a guy before doing this on TV.”

“In reality, [at the time] I was dating a girl. In fact, this girl was working on the show. We’re still friends now, but she was doing some groundwork that day. [when they filmed the kiss].”

“She really insisted on coming that day to see me kiss Thom. I was like, ‘Baby, you don’t have to come today!’ and she was like ‘I want to be there.’ And I was like, ‘Does she know? Does she know what I’m fighting?'”

Keiynan came out publicly to his fans in 2017 on Instagram after starring in Love, Simonwhich was the first mainstream gay romance movie for teens.

While filming the kiss was a big moment for Keiynan, once he got over the hurdle of the first take, he was more than happy to do it multiple times thanks to Thom’s performance.

“Thom is a great kisser. He has nice big lips — he knows that — so I was happy to keep doing it. Even though I heard my girlfriend in the background say ‘AH!'”

I’m so glad that a show from my childhood, which holds a special place in my heart, is on the same level for the actors involved. If you want to hear Keiynan answer more fan questions about dating, sexuality and queer representation, you can watch the whole video here.
