Pegasus Dance Academy specializes in traditional Greek dance that dates back over 2,500 years. Classes are offered to students from age five and up with a maximum of 20 people per class.
Sotiris Sotiriou, who formed the company in 1988, went to great lengths to maintain the authenticity of the dances, so much so that he and two other dancers from the Pegasus Dance Academy were honored to be involved in the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics. in 2000. Mr. Sotiriou attended Greek dance lectures in Greece in 1991, 1994, 1996 and 1997 and even brought one of the Greek teachers to Australia in 1997.
There are over 200 different types of Greek dances as they vary from region to region and the school may teach the dance style according to each region.
The school does not modernize these dances, but preserves them for future generations to enjoy as they were created.
Attending classes is a great way for people to connect with their heritage, experience the physical benefits of dance, and also meet people in a social atmosphere.
