Tony appoints choreographer to teach at Beijing Dance Academy

Two-time Tony Award-nominated Broadway choreographer and director Joey McKneely has been appointed by the Beijing Dance Academy to teach in the university’s music department.

According to Ba Tu, Party Secretary of the Beijing Dance Academy, over the next three years, McKneely will work with students and teachers at the university and train students at the college affiliated with the university. He will participate in the creation of original Chinese musicals by working with Chinese artists.

McKneely credits include West Side Story and The boy from Oz.

In 2011, he worked with a Chinese musical producer on a Chinese musical, I love you, Therese! and they worked together again in 2015 on a Chinese musical, Oh Kuling!about Guling, an ancient city nestled in the mountainous region of Fujian Province.

McKneely is the second foreign teacher announced by the Beijing Dance Academy since the new semester, which began in early September. Before McKneely, legendary ballet dancer and choreographer Vladimir Malakhov joined the university.
